Finding the Right Copywriter For Your Project
April 11th 2017 Sally Ormond
Once you’ve made the decision to work with a professional copywriter, you the have to find the one that’s going to deliver the results you want.
A quick Google search will show the vast number there are out there (and as with every service provider, they vary widely in experience and quality of work), so how can you find your diamond?
Someone who’s local
The benefit of going for the local option is that they can easily get to you for meetings. However, the convenience factor shouldn’t overshadow their competency.
Skype, email and phone mean it’s not a necessity to have them on your doorstep, so it may pay to look further afield.
Recommendation
Recommendation is always a good way to go because you’ll hear first-hand what it was like working with the copywriter. However, it’s worth remembering that just because they were a good fit for one business doesn’t mean they are a good fit for all companies.
Personality has a lot to do with a winning relationship.
Industry experience
This is one I get asked about a lot: “have you worked in my industry before?”
The one thing to remember is that a talented copywriter can create powerful and effective content regardless of the sector in which you work.
In fact, it’s an advantage if they haven’t worked extensively in your field because then they are not blinkered by the ‘industry norm’ and will be able to create compelling content that makes your brand stand out.
It’s always worth checking through a writer’s portfolio because that will show you the breadth of their experience and versatility as a writer.
Have a chat
As I mentioned earlier, personality has a lot to do with a successful working relationship. That’s why it’s vital you pick up the phone and have a chat.
Call several and sound them out; you’ll soon discover whom you click with. You’ll be working closely together, so it’s vital you get on.
There are no hard and fast rules about how to find your perfect copywriter because everyone’s needs are so different. The most important thing is to chat with them, that way you’ll instantly if there’s a real connection between you.
