Deciding whether or not to start a blog is tricky.
On the one hand you know it’s a great way to boost your online visibility and search rankings.
On the other, you know it’s a long term commitment of either your time (if you write the posts yourself), or financially (if you outsource the writing).
This post will help you make up your mind whether you should go for it or not.
Starting with the pros…
Google loves great, original content, so the more of it you blog, the greater your chances of being found in the search results, giving your search optimisation strategy a boost.
Not only that, but it is also a fantastic way of positioning yourself as an expert in your field, making yourself the ‘go to’ person in your industry.
Of course, all of that adds up to more traffic to your website.
So, all in all, a pretty strong case to start blogging.
But what about the cons?
One word sums up blogging – commitment.
You will have to blog regularly. All too often you see blogs start with one or two posts a month and then nothing. People get turned off very quickly by blogs that don’t post anything for months on end. So if you want to keep and grow your readership, you must blog regularly.
Staying on track
Now that you’ve decided that blogging is definitely for you, you have to decide what to write about.
Assuming you’re using it as a way to promote your business, the natural choice would be a niche that complements your business. As a copywriter, I write about blogging, copywriting, marketing, social media and running a freelance business.
The important thing is that once you’ve decided on your niche you stick to it. Your readers will soon get to know you as an authority in your field, so if you suddenly start writing about random subjects you could lose them.
Types of post
There are a whole array of blog post types you can choose from ans mixing them up will add some much needed variety. They could be things like:
- ‘How to’ guides
- Opinion pieces
- Top 10 lists
- Case studies
- Latest industry news
As you can see, blogging is a great way to boost your profile and your website rankings all in one go.
