Encourage More People to Read Your BlogJuly 15th 2014 Sally Ormond attracting readers, blog, blogging, building your blog audience
If your blog doesn’t get traffic, it’s just a space on the internet with a load of thoughts scribbled all over it.
The power of blogging comes from the people who find, read and share your stuff, so how do you attract them?
Here are a few ideas to get you started.
1. What are they looking for?
People read blogs because they are looking for something. It could be information, ideas or inspiration. But whatever it is, if you can provide it, they’ll find you.
Although that sounds obvious, there are a number of bloggers out there who insist on writing stuff about the things they’re interested in rather than what their readers want.
That’s not to say there’s no room for personal blogs that are about random things, but if you’re using your blog to promote your business you must write about what your readers want to know.
Think about what it is that you offer and about the questions you get asked by customers, then write high quality posts about that.
2. Social promotion
The best way to reach a wide audience is to promote your content through social media. After all, if no one knows you’re there they won’t be looking for you.
Make sure you have the social sharing buttons after each post and, when a post is published, let your Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter followers know.
It’s also a good idea to also promote it by having a link to your blog in your email signature, email marketing and newsletters.
3. Be specific
The best way to attract and keep readers is to make sure you write about your niche and stick to it.
If your blog covers too wide a spectrum of subjects you’ll put people off. By sticking to your niche, your readers will know what kind of information they’ll get from you and keep coming back for more.
4. Be my guest
Getting some good guest bloggers on board is a great way to widen your audience. They’ll bring fresh ideas to your portfolio of posts and, with a bit of luck, they’ll also bring their fans with them. Then, once they’ve had a poke around your blog, you could be added to their favourite blogger list too.
The headlines you use (titles) will have a big impact on whether your posts get read or not.
They are what will draw your readers in, so they deserve a lot of thought. Make sure they are attractive and deliver on their promises. People love things like ‘top tips’ and ‘how to’ articles, but make sure you mix them up with opinion pieces and infographics etc., to add a bit of variety.
6. How often should you post?
The simple answer to that is that the more often you blog, the more people you’ll attract.
But you have to be realistic and find a frequency that you can cope with.
7. Be real
The best bloggers are those that write from the heart.
If you content is honest, open and written with personality you will attract readers.
Blog readers like to get to know the writer and they do that by becoming familiar with your style. Don’t try to copy your favourite writer; find your own voice and let your personality shine through.
Maintaining a success blog is tough. You have to come up with endless ideas, find the time to write in your hectic schedule and constantly second guess you’re your audience is looking for.
But is can also be very rewarding and a great way to promote your business by showing yourself as an expert in your field.
Although it is for business, have fun with it and don’t be afraid to try something new now and then.
