Email Marketing – Essential Checks Before You Hit SendFebruary 5th 2013 Sally Ormond can-spam act, email marketing and can-spam act, email marketing check list
As you know, email marketing and newsletters are very powerful tools in your marketing armoury. But they can also do a lot of damage if you’re not careful. A rushed newsletter or careless email can create havoc for your business, so it’s essential you take your time and think about what you’re doing.
This diagram outlines the key elements of your email that must be checked before you press the send button.
But that’s just for starters because sloppy email marketing could see you fall foul of the CAN-SPAM Act and you really don’t want to do that.
To comply with the act, all your emails must:
- Not carry misleading, deceptive or false information in your “To”, “From”, “Reply to”, subject line etc. You must specify whether the email is from a company or individual and the subject line must reflect the content of the email.
- Show your physical postal address
- Include an opt-out link and you must deal with every request promptly
- Use a legitimate email service provider
Of course, we’re all human so, occasionally, things go wrong.
But if you are always sending emails that don’t abide by these rules, or contact silly errors, your reputation is going to get damaged.
Should the worse happen and something slips through the net, say sorry immediately and make it up to your customers.
When done carefully and done well, email marketing is a really valuable tool for your business – so take your time and check it carefully before you hit send.
