What’s Wrong With My Blog?

Blogging

First of all, congratulations for getting your blog set up and for publishing posts.

Another blogger is born.

But is it going as well as you’d hoped?

Have you noticed that not only is your readership not growing, your visitor numbers are actually dwindling?

The problem is that you’re not being effective – your posts are simply not hitting the spot.

A crash course on becoming an effective blogger

Number 1

Read one of your posts – be honest, does it grab you?

Are you writing in the second person (you and your), rather than the first (I and we)? By making a simple change like this, your posts will directly address the reader, drawing them into your post. You’ll build rapport and trust.

Number 2

If your posts are a single block of text, you need to work on your layout skills.

People are put off by loads of solid text, so break things up with headers and subheaders, and use other features to add interest, such as:

  • Bulleted lists
  • Images
  • Bold words

All of this will add white space to your page making it more inviting to potential readers.

Number 3

How do you end your posts?

If you just fade away, you’ve lost that reader.

It’s far more effective to end with a call to action, such as asking them to leave a comment, sign up for your newsletter or something along those lines.

By asking them to do something, you’re asking them to become an active part of your blog, showing them that their opinions matter to you.

Number 4

This one deals with the subject of your blogs.

Find your niche and sticking with it is vital if you want to grow your readership. As a copywriter, I blog about copywriting, marketing and social media issues. That way, people who read my blog have a rough idea of the type of information they will read every time they visit.

Sticking with your niche will help elevate you to expert status within your field, so if someone is looking for information in your particular area, they’ll come to you.

Number 5

The look of your blog is also important.

Lots of colours and loads of ads will scare people off. Be memorable by sticking with a few colours and make yourself instantly recognisable.

What do you think?

How about you? Do you blog regularly?

How do you attract visitors to your blog?
